Brain Gym Exercises for Kids: A Simple Guide for Parents

By the BeasyBuds team · · 6 min read

In short

Brain gym exercises for kids are short movement activities that ask both sides of the body to work together, such as crossing the midline, tracing loops or making different shapes with each hand. They are a playful way to practise coordination, focus and working memory. The simplest way to start is 10 minutes a day with an activity that has a clear start and finish.

What are brain gym exercises?

The phrase "brain gym" is used for movement activities that combine thinking with doing: one hand traces while the other hand signs, the eyes follow a loop, or the body crosses its own centre line. Children find them fun because they feel like a puzzle for the body.

There is good research on the skills these activities practise, such as fine motor control and executive functions like focus and working memory. There is less evidence for any single branded programme, so it is best to think of brain gym activities as playful practice rather than a treatment.

Easy brain gym exercises to try at home

  • Cross-crawl: touch right elbow to left knee, then left elbow to right knee, for one minute.
  • Lazy eights: trace a large figure-eight in the air or on paper, following it with the eyes.
  • Two-hand signs: one hand makes a fist, the other an open hand; swap on a clap.
  • Dot trail and sign: trace a line of coloured dots with one hand and make each colour's hand sign with the other.
  • Point and copy: point to a colour with one hand and copy its matching hand sign with the other.

How long and how often?

Short and frequent works best. Around 10 minutes a day, at a calm time such as before homework, is plenty for most children. Stop while it is still fun.

Increase the challenge slowly: go a little faster, swap hands, say the colour out loud, or go backwards around the sheet.
