Visual Tracking Activities for Kids

Visual tracking is the ability to follow a moving object or a line with the eyes, smoothly and without losing the place. It is the same skill a child uses to read along a line of text or follow a ball in the air.

Paper-based trails, loops and mazes are a calm, screen-free way to practise it, because the finger guides the eyes and the child gets instant feedback when they drift.

Where children use it every day

  • Following a line of text without skipping
  • Copying from the board
  • Catching a ball
  • Finding a matching item in a busy picture

Easy ways to practise at home

  • Tracing a figure-eight loop with one finger
  • Following a dot trail from start to finish
  • Matching raindrops to umbrellas with a pencil line
  • Torch-chasing games on the wall

Questions

Parents ask

Which sheets help with visual tracking?

Dot Trail & Hand Signs, Infinity Finger Count, Dot Colour Match and Rain Colour Match all ask the eyes to travel along a path or search for a match.

How long should visual tracking practice last?

Short and regular works best for young children: about 10 minutes, a few times a week, while it still feels like a game.
